Lake Allatoona, located just northwest of Atlanta, is a popular boating destination in the state. Hikers, however, will enjoy exploring the lake by the Homestead Loop Trail. The 5.5-mile trail is located in Red Top Mountain State Park. Red Top Mountain (in the northwestern corner of the park) got its name from the high iron-ore content in the resident soil. The mountain was once an important mining area for the metal, but today is largely appreciated for its easy access to 12,000-acre Lake Allatoona and for offering a respite from the urban life in nearby Atlanta. The Homestead Loop Trail starts at the park’s visitor center and occasionally hugs the banks of Lake Allatoona as it winds through some of the most diverse habitats of all the trails in the park. The ecosystems include lake, forest, and meadow areas for wildlife that thrive in the region. The overabundant population has caused the Department of Natural Resources and the University of Georgia to team up to study and recommend a management approach to ensure a healthy environment for the entire ecosystem.
