The summit of Springer Mountain marks the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, a 2172-mile long-distance trail that runs continuously from north Georgia to Mount Katahdin in northern Maine. Each spring, approximately 2500 hikers begin their long trek northbound from Springer Mountain, with plans to arrive in Maine by either September or October before the long, cold New England winter. Roughly 10 percent of thru-hikers travel north-to-south, however, and they typically complete their journey in the winter months at one of the two bronze plaques at the summit.
