As its name implies, the West Indian mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni) can be found in this hammock. Mahogany Hammock is surrounded by freshwater marsh with a deeper moat adjacent to the hammock, created by water flow; both help spare the hammock from lightning fires that race across the surrounding prairies in the rainy season. The entire region can be bone dry in spring before the rainy wet season makes its annual debut. The national champion West Indian mahogany can be seen adjacent to the boardwalk, its ancient, weatherworn trunk and limbs showing signs of past lightning strikes and hurricanes.
