The trailhead is located on the south side of the visitor center. About 85 percent of the trees in the hammocks of Everglades National Park are of tropical origin, and this trail is named for the gumbo-limbo (Bursera simaruba), a tropical tree characterized by thin, peeling, red bark. The gumbo-limbo trees are easily recognized along the trail. Keep an eye and ear out for vireos, flycatchers, gnatcatchers, cuckoos, and other resident or migratory birds that inhabit hardwood forests.
