Have you ever seen a cypress-lined lake? Well, this isn’t one of them. This lake has moss-draped cypress trees not only around the lake but also throughout the lake. Luckily for lake explorers, the park has three marked boat trails coursing among the 412-acre impoundment, backed up from a gristmill from the 1800s. “Brooding swamp” is a clichéd term, but it is hard to otherwise describe just what you’ll see out here. The campground is laid out in a loop sloping down toward George L. Smith Lake. Pine trees populate the loop center, which also has a grassy play area and a bathhouse. Cruise past some pull-through RV sites, then begin the pull-up lakeside campsites. Hardwoods and some pines provide maximum shade. Heavy vegetation screens sites from one another. The sites are just a few feet away from and a few feet above the cypress-laden waters. Landscaping timbers keep the sites level. Many sites are two-tiered. Deft paddlers will be able to pull their boats directly to the campsites amid the hundreds of trees growing out of the water.
