The word Amicalola is Cherokee for “tumbling waters.” This state park features a 729-foot waterfall, Amicalola Falls, reputed to be the tallest fall in the East. Yet this state park is much more than a waterfall. Overlain on a scenic mountainscape, the park offers an intimate campground, first-rate hiking trails, some of the best interpretive programs anywhere in the country, and a lodge where you can stuff yourself silly after your outdoorsy adventures. One more word about the trails here: Included among them is the approach trail to the master path of the East, the Appalachian Trail, where it begins atop nearby Springer Mountain.
