This section of the FT passes over three “islands” in the Ocala: Kerr Island, Salt Springs Island, and Riverside Island. These islands are not surrounded by water in the traditional sense, but are islands of fertile soil, supporting rich stands of longleaf and slash pine, surrounded by the more sterile soils, which support the sand-pine scrub environment so prevalent in the Ocala. This final, most northern segment of the FT in the Ocala National Forest rolls over Riverside Island, with its attractive pine stands, then passes Penner Ponds, the last prairie/pond complex in the forest. Finally, the FT reaches Lake Ocklawaha, an impoundment that is part of the now defunct Cross Florida Barge Canal project. Nonetheless, the lakeside scenery is attractive and the land remote before the path leaves the national forest, ending up on the far side of Rodman Dam. This section of the FT is used less than in other Ocala locations, and thus offers more opportunities for solitude, even though the path does cross some roads. Backcountry campsites with water are limited to areas near small ponds. Consider camping at Grassy Pond or Lake Delancy campgrounds, or get water from the campgrounds and camp along the trail. The islands of this trail have attractive potential camping areas but no water.
