This is the wettest and most unusual section of long trail in the Southeast. The FT leaves Loop Road, the southern terminus of the entire FT, and heads north through a nearly continuous bald cypress woodland that is underwater most of the year, including the drier winter hiking season. Even in the best of times it may be inundated 50% of its distance, but more likely around 95%. Prepare for wet feet on the entire trail and possibly water to your knees at times. Before hiking this section of the FT, call Big Cypress Preserve to check on water levels. All this wetness may seem daunting. On the other hand, it de-mystifies swamps to a degree: you will be hiking through one. The path also meanders through sawgrass prairies, by tree islands, and through Robert Lakes Strand, where the towering cypresses covered in air plants and ferns, tropical hammocks, and clear flowing water offer a wild Florida landscape.
