The final portion of the BMT is it’s finest. Leave Watson Gap and enter the Cohutta Wilderness. The path dips down to a couple of high elevation streams before regaining the Blue Ridge and heading north on a wide, old forest road, easily gaining elevation to peak out near Hemp Top, an old fire tower site. The trail drops down to enter Tennessee at Double Springs Gap, only to make a tough pull up Big Frog Mountain and into the Big Frog Wilderness. Reach the highest point of the BMT atop Big Frog, where yellow birch trees grow that favor the cool country farther north. The path then picks up a spindly ridgeline offering views both east and west among rock outcrops framed in grass and stunted trees. Keep working down to meet West Fork Rough Creek and travel along this small trout stream only to climb away and enter a network of multi-use trails emanating from the Ocoee River Whitewater Center. The well-blazed BMT remains easy to follow as it makes a final descent into the Ocoee River gorge and Thunder Rock Campground. Be apprised that the Benton MacKaye Trail is not blazed in either the Cohutta or Big Frog wildernesses, though it is signed at most trail junctions. Campsites with water are ample.
