This portion of the BMT has a challenging beginning, as it steeply climbs Wallalah Mountain, then descends, only to make another tough pull up Licklog Mountain. You’ll stop short of the Rhodes Mountain summit where the Benton MacKaye and Duncan Ridge trails diverge. The Duncan Ridge Trail continues up, while the BMT drops northwest toward Skeenah Gap. The ascents become shorter as the path rolls over low, timbered ridgelines between Skeenah Gap and Wilscot Gap. Cross the highway, then climb switchbacks up to Tipton Mountain. Drop to Ledford Gap only to climb Brawley Mountain, which has a fire tower that is closed to the public. The trail mostly descends from Brawley down to the Toccoa River and Shallowford Bridge, which is your route across the river.
