A cool, shady hike through ponderosa-pine and Douglas-fir forest to the east rim of Oak Creek Canyon. Walk across the highway to reach the sign that marks the start of the trail. The trail immediately turns left and starts to climb. (Ignore the trail that heads to the right and parallels the highway.) Originally built by the early settlers as a route to move their cattle to the forested plateau above, the Harding Spring Trail is still in good shape, and you’ll see sections of elaborate trail construction. The trail climbs north across the slope, leaving the busy highway far below, and then a final series of switchbacks lead to the east rim of Oak Creek Canyon. The trail continues south along the rim for 100 yards to a viewpoint overlooking the canyon.
