Perdido Key is separated from the mainland by Big Lagoon, which became part of the Intracoastal Waterway many years ago. The island has experienced high-density development in both residential and resort properties, and very little open beach remains, accounting for the popularity of the Johnson Beach complex at this unit of the Gulf Islands National Seashore; it has the only public access for miles. Adjacent to the boat launch is the beginning of a very interesting nature trail that extends inland through a low-rise forest canopy of slash pine and longleaf pine. The undergrowth is a significant community of yaupon holly, gallberry, and wax myrtle that can be a bird-watcher’s paradise in fall and winter when these plants produce berries. The yaupon holly will be heavily laden with beautiful bright red berries. The leaves of this plant were once boiled by Native Americans to create a potent brew used to test the mettle of male tribe members. Such information is provided on trailside exhibits, and a small, elevated observation platform overlooks a marshland alongside Big Lagoon. As the trail continues inland, the environment changes abruptly, becoming a secondary dune community, characterized by dwarf live oak trees, scrub oaks, and Florida rosemary bushes.
