This is an underutilized South Florida inland resource. Leave the crowds on the beaches. The campground is situated in a pleasantly remote area. A raised crushed-shell road forms a loop around a shell– rock excavated pond. Overhead, a mix of palms and pines rise over grass. Some camps have but a single palm for shade, whereas others have multiple trees keeping the sun at bay. Palmetto islands divide many of the campsites. The sites closest to the ocean are more open and breezy, offering great views of Biscayne Bay, but in turn campers are viewed by the day visitors who pull up to the dock. The sites closest to the water have easiest access to the nearby roped-off swim beach, which may be the finest natural pool you will ever enjoy. The cold showers, water spigots, and flush toilets are near the camping area in a building on stilts. Hurricanes pass this way in the fall, but that is no worry during the prime camping season here—winter.
