Back in the 1930s, Mr. Jay B. Starkey began a cattle operation in what was then rural Pasco County. Later, he worked out a deal with Southwest Florida Water Management District; his land, encompassing parts of the Anclote and Pithlachasotee rivers, is now a large wilderness area and well field for coastal Pasco County. It’s topped off with a first-rate campground designed for tent campers only. Outdoor enthusiasts can use the campground as a jumping-off point to explore foot trails, equestrian paths, and a special 7-mile paved trail that is popular with hikers and bikers alike. Be apprised that the campground is nice enough that you may not want to “jump off” from it, but instead just relax in your wooded civilization escape zone.
