Includes: Golden Orb Trail and Layton Trail, 2 short trails of 40 and 15 minutes through some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the Keys. The Spanish called Long Key Cayo Vivora, meaning “Rattlesnake Key.” Fortunately, this description applied more to the shape of the island—a rattlesnake with its jaws open—than the resident fauna. Long Key was home to one of the greatest fishing camps of all time, the Long Key Fishing Club founded by railroad builder Henry Flagler. Long Key is a narrow ribbon of park on 965 acres. Long Key could also be called Narrow Key: in some places the oceanfront boundary is only a hundred yards from US 1 and traffic is clearly visible from the beach. The Golden Orb Trail, longer of the park's two nature walks, takes about forty minutes to complete. It is accessed by a boardwalk that penetrates a dense mangrove forest. An observation platform about midway offers an excellent overview of the region, though you'll probably see mostly mangrove tops and a few birds in flight.
