Loxahatchee, essentially a sawgrass marsh, offers excellent wildlife viewing. It is one of the best places to encounter alligators in the numbers most visitors expect to find in Florida. In fact, there’s usually a gator in the slough right in front of the visitor center. Loxahatchee Refuge provides vital habitat that protects endangered and threatened creatures such as the wood stork, snail kite, alligator, and others. It is also an important wintering ground for waterfowl and other migratory birds. About half of the 220-square mile refuge is closed to the public.
