The barrier islands of Sanibel and Captiva are two of the most popular vacation spots on the entire Gulf coast. A four-lane causeway moves literally hundreds of thousands of people back and forth to the mainland annually. The beaches are superb and the fishing for snook, trout, and redfish is excellent. In the 1880s, all of Sanibel was a wildlife refuge. Today, much of the island is developed with restaurants, resorts, and condominiums. The natural places are growing increasingly scarce. Special Attractions: Guided trail and nature walks; also a nursery growing native plants.
