Includes: Boardwalk Trail, Land Trails. The Briggs Nature Center is located at the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve located between Naples and Marco Island. Estuaries, the coastal areas where fresh water mixes with salt water, are high-production biological environments. An estimated 80 to 90 percent of the fish and shellfish harvested commercially in the US spend a part of their lives in an estuarine environment. Besides serving as the nursery for shellfish, crustaceans, and fish, estuaries provide important nesting areas (called rookeries) for birds. A half-mile boardwalk penetrates six different communities varying from dry pine flatwoods to fringe marsh and brackish pond communities. In addition, two short land trails open additional plant communities and views of Rookery Bay. The opportunity for wildlife viewing here is superb. Bald eagles, ospreys, red-shouldered hawks, river otters, bobcats, skinks, indigo snakes, and a variety of woodpeckers are among the most commonly viewed residents.
