This is another of those strange, only-in-Florida stories. In 1880, wealthy saw manufacturer Hamilton Disston of Philadelphia purchased four million acres of Florida’s west coast from the state’s governor for 25 cents an acre. This massive land sale is said to have saved the state from bankruptcy. In 1882, Tarpon Springs was founded by one of Disston’s land agents, and it quickly became the most exclusive winter resort on the Gulf Coast. Sponges replaced tourists as the most important product in 1890, when a resident sent out the first boat to “hook” the sponges from the Gulf bottom. Sponges had been found off Key West as early as 1849, but had never been harvested commercially before. The Key West sponge fleet brought their cargo to sell in Tarpon Springs during the Spanish-American War because of the threat of Spanish warships. This was the beginning of Tarpon Springs’ transformation into the world’s largest natural sponge market. Although very commercialized, the Sponge Docks on Dodecanes Boulevard is Tarpon Springs’ most popular walking area. The sights, sounds, and smells are all important reasons: the colorful sponge boats with their cargoes; the divers conversing in Greek, still the only language of some residents; and the spicy aroma of sizzling lamb emanating from the numerous restaurants. Special Attractions: Viewing an authentic Greek sponge diving community.
