If you want to feel truly humbled, try standing next to a 1,000-year old oak tree on the Big Oak Trail. One tree’s gnarled and twisted girth is an incredible 37.5 feet; you’ll never worry about feeling overweight again. Huge, ancient oaks are only one of the many attractions at this 5,540-acre park. Local citizens, concerned about this hammock turning into farmland, purchased the property in the early 1930s to protect it. Considering the tremendous development close to the park these days, visitors will readily appreciate the foresight of these people. When Florida’s state park system was finally established in 1935, Highlands Hammock was one of the first four original parks.
