Depending on your interests, trail hiking may become secondary in this 5,030-acre park. Fishermen will enjoy Lake Kissimmee, rated one of the top largemouth bass waters in the entire country. Numerous high-money fishing tournaments have been held on the lake. A boat ramp is available in the park. Best fishing typically is March through May but can be quite productive year-round. A Florida fishing license is required. Plan on spending at least an hour at the 1876 “Cow Camp,” which is staffed by park rangers from 9:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. weekends and holidays only. Florida has been one of the top five cattle states for decades. Here, more than 200 acres are reserved for raising a herd of scrub cows and horses, just as Florida “Crackers” did in the 1800s. The Cow Camp consists of a corral for livestock and a wooden lean-to that a Cracker would have lived in. A ranger explains what life was like and demonstrates some of the skills needed back then, including a little of the whip-cracking that old-time wranglers used to move the herds.
