The Hillsborough River flows through this 3,738-acre park and is named for a nobleman with the unusual name of Wills Hills, who lived from 1718 to 1793. Wills Hills, also the Earl of Hillsborough, was instrumental in giving Great Britain control of Florida in general and the Tampa Bay area in particular. Two small sets of rapids are created by outcrops of Suwannee limestone. The river flows fairly swiftly, and swimming is not permitted; a half-acre, man-made swimming area is available elsewhere in the park. Special Attractions: Rapids in the Hillsborough River. Not a cause for excitement for most visitors, but the chance to hear rapids while hiking (or boating) is virtually unknown in Florida.
