Since its creation in the 1980s, Orlando Wetlands Park area has become a miniature wildlife sanctuary. Eighteen miles of berms were constructed to create seventeen wetland cells; an 80-acre lake was fashioned from the fill area needed for berm construction. Found here are more than 150 bird species and many large animals: alligators, deer, otters, and foxes. The habitat is diverse, including a cypress swamp, lake, and forest. This park can become crowded and noisy on summer weekends. If you’re seriously interested in wildlife viewing, come early on a weekday well before or after the annual hunting season. This is a 4-mile walk through one of Florida’s first large-scale man-made wetlands projects. This segment joins a 5-mile leg of the Florida Trail on the Seminole Ranch, which leads to the St. Johns River floodplain. This is excellent birding territory, particularly for great blue heron and migratory snipe. You must sign in at Seminole Ranch before hiking.
