Pronounced Tos-uh-hatch-ee, the word is actually a simplification of the Indian term Tootoosahatchee, meaning either “chicken creek” or “fowl creek.” The 28,000-acre Tosohatchee landscape is a showcase of how plant communities are shaped by the alternating cycles of flood and fire that create a patchwork of swamps, marshes, hammocks, and pine flatwoods. Animals here include numerous wading and shore birds, deer, snakes, armadillos, bobcats, turkeys, gray foxes, hawks, owls, and even endangered species such as the Florida black bear and ospreys. Florida panther sightings have been claimed here, and bald eagles still nest undisturbed in the refuge.
