Hontoon may not be Robinson Crusoe’s island, but in the mushrooming Central Florida region, it’s the next best thing. Hontoon Island has no land access—visitors arrive by boat. The park service provides free ferry service, every 15 minutes, across the narrow river channel separating the 1,650-acre park from the mainland. Just stand on the dock to attract the boatman’s attention. The ferry, which runs from 8 A.M. until one hour before sunset, is large enough to carry people only, no cars. The only motorized vehicles on the island belong to the parks people. This trail is an easy walk, but it can be wet in spots after heavy rains. The hike to the Indian shell mound takes about 90 minutes, roundtrip. Begin on the marked trail to the right of the dock and behind the administrative offices. Special Attractions: Indian mound; 80-foot observation tower overlooking the St. Johns River; canoe rental and children’s playground.
