The launch point for the boat to Caladesi Island (above), this island has two short trails worth exploring, especially if the weather is acting up and the boat ride to Caladesi looks too rough. The island, created about 7,000 years ago, is another of those developer stories who took an unknown spit of land and tried to make something wonderful of it. There are two connected loop trails that parallel each other. The Osprey Trail leads through the South Florida virgin slash pine, although the birds normally prefer to make their nests in the tops of dead trees. Extending north from the Osprey Trail is the Pelican Cove Trail. It offers excellent bird observation in the cove, which is sheltered by a sand spit.
