The major characteristic of this unusual park is the huge natural depression arranged in two long fingers that run west to east. Called a steephead ravine, it covers more than 80 acres and ranges between 70 and 120 feet in depth. It was formed over the years through erosion, by water flowing from beneath the ground on the western bank of the St. Johns River. Turned into an azalea garden back in the 1930s, the ravine is one of the prettiest places in springtime Florida. Special Attractions: The many varieties of ornamental and flowering plants. The park also protects many types of wild Florida plants.
