Includes: Gainesville - Hawthorne State Trail, La Chua, Bolen Bluff, Wacahoota, Cone's Dike, Chacala. Paynes Prairie is one of the most unusual natural areas in Florida. The prairie is a constantly changing place; sometimes a wet marsh, sometimes a fire-ravaged plain. This huge basin was formed thousands of years ago, when rain dissolved the underlying limestone and the terrain sank. For this reason, most of the plain is covered by marsh, wet prairie, and areas of open water. The uplands surrounding it are considerably more diverse, with pine flatwoods, lush hammocks, swamps, and many ponds, which attract a variety of wildlife. Indian artifacts found here date back as far as 10,000 years ago. The Seminoles were the prairie’s last Indian inhabitants, and it is thought the prairie may have been named for King Payne, a Seminole chief. In the late 1600s, this basin was the largest Spanish cattle ranch in Florida. The state intends to keep the area as natural as possible, which means nature is allowed to take care of itself. Special Attractions: The chance to see American bison (buffalo) roaming Florida’s own version of the Great Plains.
