This tiny 278-acre sanctuary in Gainesville offers an amazing amount of hiking: more than seven miles of trails through a remnant of the great longleaf pine savannahs that once covered much of the southeast. This is a rich area containing as many as 130 species of birds and 244 species of wildflowers as well as rare orchids and hooded pitcher plants. On Saturdays, a special Living History Farm recreates the pioneer lifestyle at a reconstructed log farmhouse originally built in 1880. A windmill, a garden with fruit trees, a split rail fenced barnyard with livestock, a smokehouse and a half-moon one-room schoolhouse from the 1880s (one of the region’s oldest one-room schoolhouses) all help illustrate late nineteenth century Florida life. Costumed interpretive staff answer questions, and children are allowed to feed the animals. It’s a fun outing.
