Includes: Trestle Point Trail Loop, Pine Ridge Trail Loop, Other Ichetucknee Trails. This 2,241-acre park is one of Florida’s great water parks. Nine named springs known as the Ichetucknee group combine to create the incredibly clear Ichetucknee River. The river, fed by about 233 million gallons of fresh water daily, flows for six miles through swamp and hammock communities before joining the Santa Fe River. The head spring was declared a National Natural Landmark by the US Department of the Interior in 1972. Ichetucknee is an Indian word for “pond of the beaver,” but beavers are scarce today. In the dry sandhill community of oak and pine upland of the river you will find deer, bobcats, gopher tortoises, turkeys, and many small animals. Five miles of hiking trails are scattered throughout the park. Special Attractions: The chance to tube or snorkel down one of Florida’s clearest rivers. Tubing is available at either the north or southern ends of the park. Tubers are encouraged to float the southern half of the river to help protect the fragile aquatic vegetation in the narrower northern section. A free tram operates from the parking lot at the southern end from May through September. The number of tubers is regulated, to lessen impact on the river bank.
