Although just a few miles outside of Jacksonville, the 20,885-acre Jennings State Forest is a surprisingly rich landscape with many different types of plants and animals. Several rare plants such as Bartram’s Ixia and the St. Johns Susan can be observed in the woods. Just about every type of natural community is located here: slope forests, sandhills, flatwoods, dome swamps, and blackwater streams. Hawks, whitetailed deer, river otters, turkey, alligators, and raccoons are all common residents. Miles of roads and several different creeks cut through the forest, but recreational trails are still being developed. At present, hiking is limited to a single nature trail that leads to a wildlife observation blind. Special Attractions: An opportunity to observe undisturbed wildlife.
