This forest, made up primarily of pine flatwoods, has long been in the middle of the struggle over what constitutes proper “public use.” Mining companies holding leases to a considerable portion of the forest wanted to strip mine it for phosphate. That, of course, would destroy the ecosystem along with its aesthetic qualities. The Florida Wilderness Bill now restricts that. In late spring, visitors can pick blueberries and blackberries in any number of places. Old “borrow pits,” where soil was removed to fill in low lands elsewhere, are also found throughout the forest. Many of these are now filled with water and make excellent places for “lakeside” camping or sacking out. Special Attractions: Site of Florida’s largest Civil War battle.
