Includes: Ecowalk, Multi-Use Trail. This aquatic preserve located just a few miles north of Crystal River is a place almost no one knows about, yet there are more than 8 miles of hiking trails, including a 2-mile ecowalk. The trails are so little known because the complex is administered by Florida’s Division of Marine Resources and not the Department of Environmental Protection, which is in charge of the state park system. The result: the aquatic preserve receives almost no publicity; word about it tends to spread from person to person, if at all. Although the name implies that you’ll be sloshing through some very wet territory, this is hardly the case. Instead, you’ll hike through a wide variety of terrain, including an oak grove, sabal palms, pinewoods, hardwood swamps, hammocks, and sawgrass marsh. Quite a variety of animals inhabit such diverse terrain; posted signs will help you spot wildlife and learn more about the native vegetation.
