For 1,600 years, from 200 B.C. to A.D 1400., this 14-acre site and its sixmound complex was one of the major ceremonial centers on Florida’s west coast. Also one of the longest continually-settled occupied sites in Florida, the complex was built by Indians of the Deptford culture, a group that also lived on Georgia’s Atlantic coast and relied on aquatic environments for their food. This well-shaded spot near the meandering Crystal River is as pleasant today as the period when the first inhabitants occupied the site around 500 B.C. Burial Mound F, which may contain as many as 1,000 burials, has yielded jewelry, tools, pottery, and even copper earrings. Shell drinking cups, pendants, and other ornaments were found in other mounds. Most impressive of all is huge Temple Mound A, constructed around A.D. 600 as a high platform base for a temple.
