Many people believe the name Tallahassee means “beautiful land” or “natural beauty.” The Apalachee Indian name means something far different: “land of the old fields,” “abandoned villages,” or “old town.” Paleolithic Indians roamed the area more than 12,000 years ago, but the name is more likely from the Mississippian Indians who moved into the area between 1250 and 1500. In 1539, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto set up a winter encampment in Tallahassee, using it as the starting point for the first European exploration of this new land. De Soto is believed to have held the first Christmas celebration in North America at Tallahassee. Special Attractions: The old Capitol Building, Florida State University campus, Museum of Florida History.
