The now-you-see-it, now-you-don’t phenomenon of the Aucilla River is quite unique. Like Florida Caverns State Park and the Leon Sinks, it illustrates the remarkable nature of the porous limestone rock found throughout much of Florida. Equally as impressive is the incredibly thick forest of large magnolias, oaks, and gums, the branches often intertwined with long coils of grapevines. You needn’t worry too much about wandering from the trail when the underbrush is this dense: you probably couldn’t push your way through it if you had to. Special Attractions: Like something out of a fairy tale, the Aucilla River disappears underground for the first half of the hike, emerging only as sinkhole formations. It re-emerges and flows above ground for the last half of the hike.
