The park is named after the torreya, or Florida yew, the largest bigleaf magnolia found in the United States. It grows only in this park. The torreya is one of more than 100 rare and endangered species living in this small protected area. Many of the hardwoods and plants growing in Torreya are more commonly found farther north in the Appalachian chain. The plants apparently moved into Florida during the last glacial period when the climate was wet and cool. As the climate warmed and became semi-tropical, most of the plants died off, except in a few isolated locations like Torreya, where conditions remained almost unchanged.
