Includes: Jackson Red Ground Trail, Sweetwater Trail. The largest of the Florida state forests, Blackwater River seems more like Georgia than Florida. The terrain is hilly, the soil is red, and the stands of longleaf pines here are among the finest in the United States. Turkey oaks, laurel oaks, and live oaks are scattered among the pine; the ground cover is mostly wiregrass. This is a multiple-use forest; be prepared for occasional clear-cuts from timber harvesting. These denuded sections, looking like the aftermath of a tornado, contribute to the 25 million board feet of timber removed from Blackwater State Forest annually. In a good year, the forest produces as much as $5 million in revenue. Selected seed trees are saved to start a new forest. In sixty years this new growth is ready for harvesting. In spring, millions of wildflowers decorate the forest. One of the most common is black titi, which blossoms in low wet areas; the nectar of these fragrant flowers makes a good honey. Adding to the spring colors are wild azaleas with white, pink, or yellow-orange petals. Special Attractions: One trail retraces General Andrew Jackson’s route during his 1818 campaign in Florida.
