Take an easy stroll through a forest on the edge to view a community of Vancouver Island’s Sitka spruce. Here these impressive giants reach heights of 50 to 90 meters and dominate a forest hunkered down against the tumult of the Pacific. At their most exposed, the Sitka spruce form a distinctive “krummholz”—a dense and stunted thicket that protects the inner reaches of the forest from the wrath of dramatic weather. Highlights of the hike include spruce fringe tunnels, interpretive signs, the buried bones of an ancient whale, and trees up to 800 years old.
