Accessible by boat, this park offers hikers agreeable trails past harbor and ocean viewpoints including sandstone ledges, an assortment of beaches, and a rich island history. Within range of Nanaimo Harbor, the island gets its name from the British coalmining town of Newcastle. Once the setting of a sandstone quarry, this popular boater’s destination offers hikers views of Nanaimo Harbor and Departure Bay on one side and windswept ocean views of Gabriola Island on the other.
