This agreeable walk is comprised of twelve short trails offering more than 10 kilometers of hiking through 113 hectares of protected second-growth forest past marshlands, ponds, and a lake. The Morrell Nature Sanctuary trail system hooks up with Westwood Lake Park. One of the interesting features of this hike is the number of arbutus trees. Reddish cinnamon bark and dark, shiny leaves characterize this tree. Because the trails in the sanctuary are all very short, there are many possibilities for exploring depending on time and interest. To take Rocky Knoll Trail, turn left onto a wood-chip path that is bordered by western red cedar and some Douglas fir. The path will soon switch to dirt. On this trail you’ll find arbutus trees, which indicate dry growing conditions.
