This impressive but strenuous hike offers stunning views of the Hermit Range, the Illecillewaet Glacier, the Bonney Glacier, and Rogers Pass. If you’re looking for both fantastic views and a healthy workout, this hike’s for you. You can trek for miles in the backcountry and never see the myriad glaciers and mountain peaks you’ll see from the top of Avalanche Crest. But don’t let the short distance fool you. With its steep incline, this hike will keep you occupied at least half a day. The initial part of the trail leads you through a lush forest of Douglas fir, hemlock, and western red cedar. Alpine forget-me-nots, dwarf dogwood, bead lilies, and arnica add a spatter of color. There’s no easing into this trail; the monstrous climb starts immediately with a series of switchbacks, and the high humidity makes it seem like you’re trudging through a tropical rain forest.
