This hike is probably the most popular trip, in the Chilliwack area, for local residents. It combines a mostly paved road, a wide well-maintained trail and beautiful meadows along the ridge from Elk Mountain to Mount Thurston. They are lovely at any time, but especially spectacular if the flowers are in bloom. If you have time for only a short hike, Elk alone is well worth your time. Locals often hike it in the evening after work. With the day at your disposal, amble along the ridge to Thurston. The views are to the south looking down on the valley of the Chilliwack River and across to Mount Baker, Tomyhoi Peak, the Border Peaks, Mount Slesse and Mount Rexford. However, the road approach is from the Fraser Valley. In fact, part of the interest of this outing is the deviousness of your approach to the parking spot, which involves an exercise in following rural roads. The route takes you through the well-established little community of Ryder Lake.
