As its name suggests, the Turnagain Arm Trail winds along the northern shore of Turnagain Arm, a long, narrow fjord. Originally known as the Old Johnson Trail, it once ran all the way from Knik to Girdwood. Now it runs from Potter Marsh (just south of Anchorage) to Windy Corner, meandering through stands of poplar, aspen, spruce, and birch. Dazzling views across Turnagain Arm punctuate long stretches of dense forest, making for an enjoyable contrast. Near McHugh Wayside, a 1 tp 2-mile side trail climbs to Table Rock, with high vistas and an excellent picnic spot. You can hike the Turnagain Arm Trail in its entirety (the mileposts count upward heading east) or start from any of four trailheads for shorter trips.
