Ptarmigan Peak, a craggy pyramid rising behind popular Flattop Mountain, is perhaps the fiercest-looking mountain near Anchorage. Its most prominent feature, a steep north face perennially streaked white by a snow couloir, intimidates many would-be summiters. Despite this, the mountain actually makes for a pleasant visit. It’s known among the outdoor community as a scenic challenge that beginning climbers should attempt before earning their “Chugach legs.” The standard (and very safe) route avoids the couloir, instead climbing from the Powerline Trail past a windswept tarn, up scree slopes and a jumble of shallow gullies to the summit.
