Many devoted Chugach climbers, at one time or another, aim to climb all ten peaks west of Ship Creek that rise higher than 5000 feet. This isn’t an easy job—some of these summits require routefinding and moderate scrambling. Some are less difficult to surmount, but lie high above and far from any trailhead. Such is the case with East Tanaina and Koktoya Peaks, two remote mountains crowding the shores of Long Lake. They both demand a little scrambling, but climbing either peak is mostly a matter of perseverance. It’s a long trek to either summit from the trailhead, so plan on starting very early or making camp at the lake.
