With a clear trail across open tundra, solid footing, and a route that never climbs too steeply, Rendezvous is a great climb for kids and beginning hikers. Nearby ski lifts and an abandoned military installation compromise the area’s wildness, but add a certain intrigue to the hike. Come in late summer and you will find the hillsides draped in wildflowers and a variety of berries ripe for the picking. From the parking lot, look uphill to where the main ski lift ends; Rendezvous Peak sits at the left end of this ridge. The trail climbs along a streambed to a pass just north of Rendezvous, then turns right and heads up to the summit. Berry pickers have worn a number of smaller trails into the ski slopes and on nearby hills. This is a popular late-summer activity: come in August and you are certain to see platoons of pickers, buckets in hand, searching for blueberries, mossberries, crowberries, and cranberries.
