Though mostly a land of open tundra and jagged mountains, Chugach State Park also boasts acres of verdant forests. You’ll find these in spades on the Ptarmigan Valley Trail, a gentle walk through a boreal forest teeming with moose, porcupine, wolverines, jays, warblers, and a multitude of other winged and four-legged creatures. Designed for snowmobilers, the trail is kept wide and free of brush. After winding along a hillside for about 4 miles, it enters the upper Ptarmigan Valley (also called Little Peters Creek Valley), where you can hop onto a high ridge if you want a view. The true charm of this trail, however, lies in the woods themselves—dark, dense, and vibrant.
