Though it’s one of the shortest walks in Chugach State Park, the Thunder Bird Falls Trail reaches into a wonderful part of Anchorage’s backyard wilderness. The trail winds through tall birch and cottonwoods to a sturdy deck with a vantage over Thunder Bird Falls, and a side spur leads down to the banks of Thunder Bird Creek. Chugach State Park owns only 10 acres around the falls; the neighboring land has been ceded to the Athabascan natives living in nearby Eklutna village. They once hunted and fished throughout this area, and have regained some ownership rights since the 1968 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The woods remain as quiet and still as they were centuries ago, before European ships ever charted Alaska’s shores.
