The majestic white mountain known as Denali (Mount McKinley) looms over the Peters Hills, making its presence, 40 miles away, felt whether it is visible or not. When Denali is out, the views of it and its consorts, Foraker and Hunter, are superb. When Denali is shrouded with clouds, you may still be able to see the Kanikula and Tokositna Glaciers and the jagged black peaks of the Tokosha Mountains—and there is always the chance of a glimpse of Denali later in the trip. No matter what the weather, this trip offers wonderful walking on alpine ridges, great camping beside alpine lakes, blueberries and low bush cranberries in season, and the possibility of glimpsing a grizzly bear or a wolf. The hike is particularly scenic in early September when the rich reds and golds of autumn foliage are at their best. But, beginning in late August, the area is also popular with hunters, particularly on weekends, and many hunters use all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) near the beginning of this hike.
